Acts 1 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Acts 1 records the transition between the earthly ministry of Jesus and the birth of the Church.

Key events:

  • Jesus appears alive for forty days after His resurrection.
• He teaches about the Kingdom of God.
• He commands the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit.
• He gives the foundational mission statement in Acts 1:8 — witness from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.
• He ascends into heaven before their eyes.
• Angels promise His return in the same way.
• The believers gather in unity in the upper room (about 120 people).
• Matthias is chosen to replace Judas, restoring the Twelve.

This chapter establishes:
Christ’s authority,
The coming Spirit,
The global mission,
And the organized witness of the apostles.

The Church does not begin with action —
It begins with obedience and waiting.

Christ-Foreshadowing (Acts Lens)

Acts 1 reveals Christ as:

  • The Risen Lord (bodily alive after crucifixion)
• The Ascended King (enthroned at the Father’s right hand)
• The Sender of the Spirit
• The Returning Judge

Though physically absent, Jesus is actively ruling and directing His Church.
Acts is the continuation of His ministry through the Spirit.

You Will Be My Witnesses”

(Verse 1)

The former book told what He began,

Teaching the Kingdom across the land,

After the cross and the empty grave,

He stood alive — the One who saves.

For forty days He spoke of the reign,

Opened the Scriptures once again,

“Do not leave Jerusalem yet —

The Father’s promise is coming.”

(Pre-Chorus)

“John baptized with water below,

Soon the Spirit will overflow.”

(Chorus)

You will receive power when He comes,

When the Holy Spirit falls upon you,

Jerusalem first — let it begin,

Then Judea, Samaria, beyond your view.

To the ends of the earth you’ll testify,

The risen Lord now glorified.

(Verse 2)

“Lord, will You now restore the throne?”

They still thought of Israel alone.

“It’s not for you to know the time,

The Father keeps that in His design.”

Then lifted up before their sight,

A cloud received Him from their eyes,

Ascending King in sovereign grace,

Exalted now to highest place.

(Pre-Chorus 2)

Two men in white stood by their side,

“Why gaze upward?” the angels cried.

(Chorus)

You will receive power when He comes,

When the Holy Spirit falls upon you,

Jerusalem first — let it begin,

Then Judea, Samaria, beyond your view.

To the ends of the earth you’ll testify,

The risen Lord now glorified.

(Bridge)

This same Jesus will return

In the way you saw Him ascend,

But now He reigns at the Father’s hand,

Until the ages reach their end.

Not by sword and not by might,

But by the Spirit’s holy light.

(Verse 3)

They returned to Jerusalem’s streets,

To the upper room where believers meet,

Peter stood among the eleven there,

One hundred twenty joined in prayer.

He spoke of Judas and his fall,

The field he bought, his tragic end,

“Another must now take his place,

A witness from beginning to ascension.”

Two were chosen — Joseph called Justus,

And Matthias standing near,

They prayed, “Lord, You know every heart,”

The lot was cast — Matthias appeared.

(Final Chorus — Stronger)

We will receive power when He comes,

When the Holy Spirit falls upon us,

Jerusalem first — let it begin,

Then outward still in holy trust.

To the ends of the earth we go,

The risen Christ the world will know.

(Outro)

The King has risen.

The King has ascended.

The mission begins.
