In-Depth Summary
John commands believers to test spirits because false prophets have gone into the world.
The test: Does the spirit confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh?
Incarnation is the dividing line.
Believers overcome false teachers because the Spirit within them is greater than the spirit of the world.
John then expands the love theme: God is love.
Love originates in God and reveals God.
God demonstrated love by sending His Son as the propitiation for our sins.
Perfect love casts out fear — specifically fear of judgment. Fear relates to punishment; love relates to security.
If someone claims to love God but hates a brother, the claim is false.
Christ Anchor — Chapter 4
Christ is:
The test of truth and the source of love both center on Him.
🌲 1 John 3 — “Children of God”
Genre: Expansive acoustic worship / building anthem
Vibe: Strong identity, steady conviction, warm assurance
Verse 1
See what kind of love the Father
Has poured upon our lives—
That we should now be called His children,
Born from heaven’s light.
The world may not recognize us,
It did not know Him then—
But what we are has been decided:
We belong to Him.
Chorus
We are children of God,
Not by striving, not by blood.
When He appears we’ll see Him clear—
Made like Him in love.
So we turn from lawless ways,
We walk in righteous love.
Not just in word, but truth displayed—
We are children of God.
Verse 2
Sin is not our master now,
For Christ was revealed to save.
He came to break the works of darkness,
To free us from its chains.
Whoever makes a home in Jesus
Will not live at peace with sin.
A heart reborn cannot keep hiding
Where death has always been.
Verse 3
Cain chose hate and rose against
His brother in the field.
But we have passed from death to life
When love becomes our shield.
If someone sees a brother’s need
And closes up their heart,
How can the love of God remain
If mercy won’t depart?
Bridge
Little children, love in action,
Not in empty speech—
Lay your life down like the Savior,
Practice what you preach.
When our hearts begin to tremble,
When condemnation starts—
God is greater than our weakness,
He knows our hidden parts.
Final Chorus
We are children of the Light,
Set apart from death and night.
If we love as He first loved,
We abide in God above.
Confidence before His throne—
Not because we stand alone.
Christ has written who we are—
Children of God.
