On his journey to Haran, Jacob stops for the night and dreams of a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. God renews the covenant promise given to Abraham, assuring Jacob of His presence and protection. When Jacob awakens, he declares, “Surely the Lord is in this place,” and sets up a stone pillar, naming it Bethel, meaning “House of God.” This chapter shows that God meets people in their weakness and loneliness, turning ordinary places into holy ground. His promise to be with Jacob echoes the truth that God’s presence travels with His people wherever they go.
