Luke 23 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Luke 23 records Jesus’ unjust trial, rejection, and crucifixion. Though repeatedly declared innocent, Jesus is condemned under pressure. Barabbas is released in His place, illustrating substitution.

On the way to the cross, Jesus warns of coming judgment and extends compassion even in suffering. While crucified, He prays forgiveness for His executioners and grants salvation to a repentant criminal. His death is marked by darkness, the tearing of the temple curtain, and a final act of trust in the Father.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Luke 23 reveals Christ as the innocent substitute who bears sin willingly. Barabbas’ release anticipates the exchange of grace, the torn curtain signals restored access to God, and Jesus’ final words reveal a Savior who dies in trust so others may live.

Full Song Lyrics

Verse 1 — Before PilateAt daybreak they brought Jesus bound
Before Pilate accusations sounded
“He misleads the people,” they claimed aloud
“Forbids taxes, calls Himself king,” they vowed
Pilate asked Him plainly then,
“Are You the King of the Jews?” — “You say that I am”

Chorus — Innocent“I find no guilt,” Pilate said
No crime deserved the words they spread
But fear of crowds began to rise
And truth stood still before their cries

Verse 2 — Sent to HerodHearing He was Galilean born
Pilate sent Him to Herod, scorned
Herod hoped for a sign to see
But Jesus spoke no defense plea
Mocked in robes, laughed at again
He was sent back to Pilate’s hand

Verse 3 — BarabbasPilate spoke to the gathered crowd
“You brought this Man — no guilt is found
I will punish Him and let Him go”
But voices shouted louder, “No!”
“Release Barabbas!” they all cried
A murderer freed — Jesus denied

Chorus — The ExchangeThe guilty walked, the righteous stayed
An innocent life for the crowd’s demand
What fear decided in that hour
God was still at work in power

Verse 4 — On the Way to the CrossThey led Him out, the cross laid bare
Simon carried the weight He bore
Women wept along the road
Jesus spoke of days foretold
“Do not weep because of Me
But for what is soon to be”

Verse 5 — The CrucifixionThey crucified Him on the hill
Soldiers cast lots, hearts were still
“Father, forgive them,” Jesus prayed
“They do not know what they have done this day”
Two criminals hung on either side
One mocked — one turned — one hoped and cried

Chorus — Today“Remember me when You come as King”
Jesus answered suffering
“Today with Me you will be
In paradise — forgiven, free”

Verse 6 — Darkness and DeathDarkness fell across the land
The temple curtain torn by God’s own hand
“Father, into Your hands I place
My spirit now” — His final breath
A centurion, seeing all
Said, “This Man was righteous” — truth stood tall

Final Chorus — It Is FinishedThe Son was given, the price was paid
Justice met mercy on that day
What looked like loss was heaven’s plan
Life was opened through this Man

OutroThey watched Him die, the tomb lay near
But God’s redemption had begun here
