Ezekiel 38 introduces the prophecy of Gog, a powerful leader from distant regions who gathers a vast coalition of nations to invade the restored land of Israel. The attack comes at a time when the people are living securely, having been gathered from exile and settled in peace. Gog’s motive is plunder and conquest, believing Israel to be vulnerable and unprotected.
God declares that this invasion ultimately serves His own sovereign purpose. He draws Gog into the land in order to confront and defeat him publicly. The chapter describes a dramatic divine response marked by earthquake, confusion, plague, and overwhelming judgment. The purpose of this confrontation is not only Israel’s protection but the revelation of God’s holiness and supremacy before all nations. The chapter ends with God’s resolve to make His name known through decisive action against arrogant power.
Ezekiel 38 foreshadows Jesus Christ as the sovereign Lord who confronts and overthrows the gathered forces of rebellion. The divine intervention against Gog anticipates Christ’s ultimate victory over hostile powers, where God alone defeats the enemies arrayed against His people and reveals His holiness before the world.
Ezekiel 38 — “Gog Comes Against the Land”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — Set Your Face
The word of the Lord came unto me
Son of man, prophesy
Set your face against Gog today
Prince of the lands far away
From the distant north you will arise
With many nations at your side
Horses, armor, shields and swords
A gathered host by your own accord
Chorus
You move by plan you think your own
But steps are guided by My throne
I turn you where My purpose leads
The Lord commands both kings and deeds
Verse 2 — A Peaceful Land
In days to come you will advance
Against a land restored by chance
People gathered from sword and fire
Living secure without wall or wire
You say, “I’ll take an easy spoil
A quiet land I’ll overrun”
But I have drawn you to this place
To show My power, show My face
Chorus
You come for silver, gold, and gain
But judgment waits upon the plain
What you intend for violent theft
Becomes the ground where pride is left
Verse 3 — The Lord Responds
On that great day My fury burns
My jealous wrath within Me turns
The earth will shake beneath My feet
Mountains fall, and walls retreat
Sword against sword, confusion reigns
Plague and blood and flooding rains
Fire and hail from heaven fall
The Lord stands judge before them all
Final Chorus — The Holy Name
I will magnify My name
Before the nations, free from shame
They will know — when terror comes
I am the Lord, the Holy One
Outro
Thus says the Lord — the day is near
My holiness will all revere
