Ezekiel 36 declares God’s determination to restore Israel for the sake of His holy name, which had been profaned among the nations during Israel’s exile. God promises to reverse the shame placed upon the land, rebuilding ruined cities and restoring agricultural abundance. The renewal is not grounded in Israel’s merit but in God’s commitment to His covenant reputation before the world.
At the heart of the chapter is God’s promise of inward transformation. He declares that He will cleanse His people from impurity, remove their hardened hearts, and give them new hearts and a new spirit. This internal renewal will enable genuine obedience rather than superficial reform. The chapter emphasizes that restoration involves both physical renewal of the land and spiritual renewal of the people, resulting in a visible testimony to God’s faithfulness and holiness among the nations.
Ezekiel 36 foreshadows Jesus Christ through the promise of cleansing, new hearts, and the gift of God’s Spirit. The sprinkling of clean water anticipates spiritual cleansing fulfilled in Christ, while the gift of a new heart and Spirit points to the transforming work inaugurated through Him. What Ezekiel promises corporately, Christ brings personally and permanently to those who belong to God.
Ezekiel 36 — “A New Heart, A New Spirit”
Full Song Lyrics
Verse 1 — Mountains of Israel
The word of the Lord came unto me
Son of man, speak prophecy
To Israel’s hills long trampled down
Despised by nations all around
You were mocked, your land was shamed
But I will act for My holy name
I will restore what was laid bare
And nations will know I was there
Chorus
Not for you alone I rise
But for My name before all eyes
What was profaned I make restored
You will know — I am the Lord
Verse 2 — Gathered from the Nations
I will take you from every land
Bring you home by My own hand
You will dwell where your fathers stood
Cities rebuilt, the land made good
Fields will flourish, ruins heal
The nations watch what I reveal
They will say, “This wasted place
Is now like Eden by God’s grace”
Chorus
What was lost I now reclaim
By mercy strong and truth the same
The Lord has spoken — it shall be
A living sign for all to see
Verse 3 — Clean Water, New Heart
I will sprinkle clean water on you
Wash away what made you untrue
I’ll take your heart of stone away
Give you flesh that hears and stays
I’ll put My Spirit deep inside
Cause you to walk in truth and right
My statutes lived, My laws obeyed
A faithful people newly made
Final Chorus — The Lord’s Promise
You will be My people still
I will be your God by will
The land restored, the shame erased
My holy name no more disgraced
Outro
Then you will know — when all is done
I am the Lord, the Holy One
