God compares Assyria to a towering cedar of Lebanon, nourished by abundant waters and unmatched in height and beauty. The tree provided shelter to nations and was admired by all. Yet because of pride in its greatness, God handed it over to foreign nations to be cut down.
Its fall was catastrophic, shaking nations and sending it down to the realm of the dead alongside other fallen powers. The message is clear: no empire, ruler, or nation can exalt itself above God. Power and success are gifts from the Lord, and pride invites destruction.
Ezekiel 31 contrasts human pride with true humility. Where the mighty cedar exalted itself and fell, Christ humbled Himself and was exalted. Jesus is the true King who did not grasp for glory but received it through obedience, becoming the everlasting ruler God establishes forever.
Ezekiel 31
“The Cedar Brought Low”
Verse 1
Who can compare to your height and name?
A cedar raised in forests of fame.
Waters fed you from depths unseen,
Roots ran wide, your crown grew green.
Branches stretched where the nations stayed,
Birds of the sky in your shadow laid.
None like you in beauty stood,
You rose so tall — as only you could.
Pre-Chorus
But your heart grew proud in the height you gained,
You forgot the hand by which you reigned.
Chorus
So the cedar fell from the heights above,
Cut down low by the God who gives love.
What was lifted high was brought to the ground,
No pride stands firm when the Judge comes down.
The Lord alone exalts and humbles all,
He raises kings — and He makes them fall.
Verse 2
Foreign hands with the sharpest blade
Cut you down as the Lord decreed.
Your branches broke, your shade withdrew,
Those who rested fled from you.
At the sound of your crashing fall,
Nations trembled — great and small.
What once stood strong in splendor and might
Was cast to darkness, stripped of light.
Pre-Chorus 2
No tree may boast above the sky,
For the Most High sees every eye.
Chorus
So the cedar fell from the heights above,
Cut down low by the God who gives love.
What was lifted high was brought to the ground,
No pride stands firm when the Judge comes down.
The Lord alone exalts and humbles all,
He raises kings — and He makes them fall.
Bridge
Down to the pit, to the depths below,
Among the fallen long ago.
Trees of Eden look on and know
What pride destroys — and mercy shows.
Outro / Anchor Line
Let no ruler trust in height or name,
For strength and breath are not self-claimed.
The Lord brings low, the Lord makes strong —
All glory belongs to Him alone.
