Ezekiel 23 uses an extended allegory to describe Israel’s spiritual unfaithfulness.
Both sisters symbolize God’s covenant people who pursued political alliances and pagan worship instead of trusting the Lord.
Samaria’s earlier destruction by Assyria was meant to be a warning. Jerusalem saw this judgment but exceeded her sister’s sins, forming alliances with Assyria, Babylon, and Egypt, while adopting their idolatrous practices.
The chapter emphasizes:
The “cup” imagery represents shared guilt and unavoidable consequences.
God’s purpose in exposing sin publicly is instruction, so others may fear the Lord and avoid the same path.
Ezekiel 23 — “Two Sisters, One Betrayal”
Genre & Vibe: Prophetic lament → courtroom accusation — solemn, raw, unflinching
Verse 1 — Two Sisters Born
The word of the Lord came strong and clear
Two daughters born in a distant year
Same mother, same beginning
Same covenant love they kept on sinning
One was older, one was young
Both unfaithful, both undone
In Egypt’s land their shame began
They sold their hearts, forgot My hand
Chorus — Oholah and Oholibah
Oholah, Oholibah — sisters torn apart
One left Me first, one broke My heart
You chased the lovers of the land
And turned away from My commands
I gave you shelter, I gave you My name
But you traded truth for lust and shame
Verse 2 — Oholah’s Sin (Samaria)
Oholah saw Assyria rise
Warriors clothed in splendored guise
She burned with desire, gave herself away
Trusted foreign arms instead of Me
They took her sons, they stripped her bare
Judgment fell — I was not there
She would not learn, she would not turn
So I let her lovers make her burn
Chorus — Lovers Who Destroy
You ran to those who would not save
You bowed to power, not to grace
What you desired became your rod
You forgot your covenant God
Verse 3 — Oholibah’s Deeper Fall (Jerusalem)
Oholibah saw — and wanted more
Not warned by what her sister bore
She lusted after Babylon
Painted eyes, alliances drawn
She remembered Egypt’s chains
Longed again for former pains
Called for men who would disgrace
The holy city, sacred place
Bridge — Judgment Declared
I gave you lovers — now they turn
Those you trusted make you burn
They strip you naked, judge your crime
Cup of wrath — now drink what’s Mine
You will bear your sister’s fate
Measured judgment — full and great
You will know, in pain and loss
I am the Lord — you chose the cost
Verse 4 — The Cup of Wrath
A cup too deep, a cup too wide
Mockery poured out with pride
Drunk with sorrow, torn with grief
Grinding teeth in disbelief
You forgot Me — says the Lord
You cast My truth behind your door
So now you face what you have done
Justice falls — the day has come
Final Chorus — The Lord Speaks
I am the Lord — faithful and true
You betrayed Me — I warned you
This is why your sins are shown
So My name will still be known
Put an end to all this shame
Let the nations fear My name
Outro — Purpose of Judgment
So the women of the land will see
And learn the cost of infidelity
You shall know when all is done
I am the Lord — the Holy One
