Ezekiel is commanded to sing a lament over the princes of Israel. Using poetic imagery, Judah’s leaders are compared first to lion cubs who grow violent and are captured by foreign nations. The imagery then shifts to a vine once strong and fruitful, now uprooted, burned, and left without a ruling branch.
The lament reflects the downfall of Judah’s monarchy and the failure of its leaders. What began with promise and strength ended in exile and silence. This chapter is not a warning, but a mourning — acknowledging that judgment has fallen and leadership has collapsed.
The lament highlights the absence of a righteous king. It prepares the longing for a future ruler — one who would not devour but shepherd, not be taken in chains but reign forever. This hope finds fulfillment in Christ, the true King who restores what was lost.
Ezekiel 19
“A Lament for the Princes”
Verse 1
Raise a lament for the princes’ line,
Born of a lioness — royal by design.
She raised her cubs with strength and flame,
They learned to tear, they learned the game.
Pre-Chorus
One became a lion, fierce and bold,
Devoured men, his power told.
The nations heard, they set the snare,
Dragged him off — he ruled no more there.
Chorus
How the mighty fell from the land,
Crowned in strength, now bound in chains.
What was raised in promise and pride
Was carried off — the throne denied.
This is the song the broken sing:
A lament for Judah’s kings.
Verse 2
Another rose where the first one fell,
Roamed the land, learned cruelty well.
Strong in power, loud in roar,
Till nations closed the trap once more.
Pre-Chorus 2
Hooks and chains they bound him fast,
Brought him where his voice would not last.
No roar again on Israel’s hill,
Silenced strength by sovereign will.
Chorus
How the mighty fell from the land,
Crowned in strength, now bound in chains.
What was raised in promise and pride
Was carried off — the throne denied.
This is the song the broken sing:
A lament for Judah’s kings.
Bridge (Image Shift)
Your mother was a fruitful vine,
Planted by waters — strong in time.
Branches fit for rulers’ rods,
Lifted high among the clouds.
Verse 3 (Lament Turn)
But fury came, the vine was torn,
Cast to ground, left dry and worn.
Fire consumed the ruling branch,
No scepter left to lead or guard.
Final Chorus
How the mighty fell from the land,
No staff to rule, no throne to stand.
What once ruled strong is laid to rest,
A kingdom judged, a song confessed.
This is the lament God has sung:
The crown is gone — the work is done.
Outro / Anchor Line
This is a lament and will remain,
A funeral song for royal shame.
The throne lies bare, the vine destroyed —
Until God raises what He’s anointed.
