Ezekiel confronts Jerusalem’s leaders, who falsely claim security while promoting violence and injustice. God exposes their thoughts and declares that the judgment they dismiss will come upon them. When one leader dies suddenly, it confirms the certainty of God’s word.
Yet the chapter turns toward hope. God promises the exiles — not those remaining in the city — that He will gather them, give them one heart and a new spirit, and restore true obedience. The chapter ends with the glory of the Lord leaving Jerusalem entirely, resting on the mountain east of the city, marking the completion of God’s withdrawal before judgment.
The promise of a new heart and new spirit anticipates the work of Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The glory departing eastward foreshadows the day God’s presence would return — ultimately fulfilled through Christ and the future restoration of God’s people.
Ezekiel 11
“I Will Give Them One Heart”
Verse 1
The Spirit lifted me once again,
To the eastern gate where leaders stand.
They plotted peace where none was found,
Calling the city safe and sound.
Pre-Chorus
They said, “This city is the pot,”
“We are the meat — we fear Him not.”
But God who hears the hidden thought
Answered lies the people taught.
Chorus
I know your thoughts, I hear your plans,
Blood fills the streets by your own hands.
What you fear will surely come,
The sword will fall — the city undone.
You will know when all is shown:
I am the Lord upon the throne.
Verse 2
One fell dead while I still spoke,
A sign that every word was true.
I fell and cried, “Is this the end?
Will all the remnant perish too?”
Pre-Chorus 2
Then mercy spoke across the land,
To scattered ones by exile’s hand.
Though far removed from holy ground,
My presence still with them is found.
Chorus (Hope Turn)
I will gather you from where you’ve been,
Bring you home from distant lands.
I will give you one new heart,
A spirit clean — a brand-new start.
Bridge
I’ll take the stone from flesh and bone,
Replace it with a heart that knows.
They will walk the ways I show,
And I will be their God alone.
Outro / Anchor Line
Then the glory rose and slowly went,
To the mountain east of the city bent.
Judgment spoken, mercy declared —
God departed, but hope was spared.
