God commissions Ezekiel as a prophet to the house of Israel, calling him “son of man” to emphasize both his humanity and his role as God’s representative. The Spirit empowers Ezekiel to stand and listen. God warns him that the people are rebellious and stubborn, but Ezekiel’s responsibility is obedience, not results.
The scroll filled with lament and woe prepares Ezekiel for a difficult message, reminding us that God’s truth must be spoken even when it is unwelcome. Faithfulness to God’s word is the measure of success.
Christ-Foreshadowing
Ezekiel, called “son of man,” foreshadows Christ, who would also be sent to a resistant people, speak God’s words faithfully, and stand firm regardless of rejection.

A voice spoke out of the fire and the light,
Calling my name in the still of His might.
“Son of man, rise, stand on your feet,
I have a word for you to speak.”
