Zephaniah 1 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Zephaniah 1 announces the coming “Day of the Lord” — a time of sweeping judgment that begins with Judah but extends to all the earth. God declares His intention to remove idolatry, complacency, and divided loyalty from among His people.

The chapter exposes spiritual indifference as dangerous rebellion. Those who assume God will not act are singled out for judgment. Wealth, status, and power offer no protection when the Day arrives.

This opening chapter establishes Zephaniah’s central theme: the Day of the Lord is both near and unavoidable.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Zephaniah 1 intensifies the need for refuge from the Day of the Lord. The sweeping judgment described here prepares the way for Christ, who later bears judgment so that mercy can be offered.

The silence before the Lord anticipates the moment when judgment falls — a silence ultimately broken at the cross, where justice and mercy meet.

Zephaniah 1 — The Day of the Lord Is Near

Verse 1 — The Word Falls

The word of the Lord came down
In the days of Josiah crowned
Son of Amon, king of Judah’s land
Yet judgment stands close at hand
I will sweep away everything
From the face of the earth, says the Lord
Man and beast, bird and fish
None untouched by My sword

Chorus — Swept Away

I will sweep it all away
From the face of the land
I will cut off idol and name
From the work of man
The Day of the Lord is near
Yes, the Day is near

Verse 2 — Judah Exposed

I will stretch out My hand on Judah
On Jerusalem’s streets of pride
I will cut off Baal from this place
Every trace they tried to hide
Those who bow on rooftops high
To sun and moon across the sky
Those who swear by the Lord — then Baal
Divided hearts will fall

Pre-Chorus

Those who turn back, who do not seek
Who never ask for Me

Chorus — Swept Away

I will sweep it all away
From the face of the land
I will cut off idol and name
From the work of man
The Day of the Lord is near
Yes, the Day is near

Verse 3 — Silence Before the Lord

Be silent before the Lord God
For the Day has been prepared
A sacrifice has been made ready
Guests invited — judgment declared
On princes, sons of kings
Those clothed in foreign ways
On all who leap across the threshold
And fill their houses with deceit

Bridge — Searching the City

I will search Jerusalem with lamps
Punish those settled, thick like wine
Who say, “The Lord will do nothing”
Neither good nor ill in time
Their wealth will be plundered fast
Their houses left uninhabited
They will build — but never live
Plant — but never drink from it

Verse 4 — The Great Day

The great Day of the Lord is near
Near and coming fast
The cry on that day is bitter
Strong warriors weep at last
A day of wrath, distress, ruin
Darkness, gloom, and dread
A day of trumpet and battle cry
Against fortified walls instead

Final Chorus — The Day

The Day of the Lord is near
No silver, no gold can save
In the fire of His jealous wrath
All the earth will be laid bare
The Day of the Lord is near
Who can stand in that day?

Outro — Consumed

In the fire of His jealousy
The whole earth will be consumed
For He will make a sudden end
Of all who dwell upon the land
