Jeremiah 50 begins the longest oracle in the book — God’s judgment against Babylon. The empire that executed God’s discipline against Judah now faces judgment for pride, cruelty, and arrogance against the Lord.
The chapter moves in two intertwined streams: Babylon’s fall and Israel’s restoration. As Babylon is crushed, God gathers His scattered people, describing them as lost sheep misled by corrupt shepherds. Judgment against Babylon is not random; it is measured, intentional, and just.
God declares Himself incomparable — the only true Shepherd, Judge, and King. The “hammer of the whole earth” is broken because no empire is exempt from accountability.
Jeremiah 50 teaches that God may use nations for His purposes, but He never excuses their sin. The fall of Babylon becomes the doorway for redemption, proving that God’s justice always serves His covenant mercy.
Babylon Has Fallen” — Jeremiah 50
Verse 1 — The Announcement
Declare it among the nations now
Lift up a banner, do not bow
Babylon is taken, idols shamed
Her images broken, gods disgraced
Bel is humiliated, Merodach falls
Power collapses in palace halls
From the north a nation comes
To make her land a silent sum
Chorus — Babylon Falls
Babylon falls, the proud undone
The mighty city overrun
What ruled the world by force and fear
Now meets the end — the Lord is near
No throne endures, no empire stays
When God arises… kingdoms fade
Verse 2 — A People Returning
In those days, at that time declared
The sons of Israel will be spared
Together Judah seeks the Lord
With tears they walk the homeward road
They ask the way to Zion still
Their faces set with steady will
A covenant renewed in grace
A bond not time nor exile breaks
Chorus — Lost Sheep Found
My people were lost sheep astray
Led off by shepherds who lost the way
Kings devoured them, none said “wrong”
Now vengeance comes — it won’t be long
I punish Babylon and her land
As once I did by My own hand
Bridge — The Lion Comes
A lion rises from the brush
Against the proud, a sudden rush
I summon one, then send him back
Who can resist? Who can attack?
Who is like Me? Who dares contend?
What shepherd stands and does not bend?
At My decree the strong will flee
The earth will shake… because of Me
Verse 3 — The Day of Payback
This is the vengeance of the Lord
For what was done with ruthless sword
She touched My heritage with pride
Now judgment turns the crushing tide
Babylon’s warriors lose their might
Her streets grow still, her lamps lose light
The hammer of the earth is cracked
The one who struck… now struck back
Chorus — Measure for Measure
Do to her as she has done
Repay her deeds — the judgment’s run
She boasted loud against the Lord
Now lies defeated by His word
The Lord of Hosts has sworn it true
What Babylon dealt… returns to you
Verse 4 — Hope for the Redeemed
Fear not, My servant — do not dread
Your guilt is sought, but none is found
Though discipline has marked your road
I will forgive, I lift the load
I bring destruction on her kings
Her leaders fall, her counsel breaks
But Israel stands, restored and clean
Redeemed by God — no longer seen
Final Chorus — The Lord Reigns
Babylon falls, the captive freed
The Lord fulfills what He decreed
From tyrant’s hand to mercy’s door
My people live… enslaved no more
The Judge of all has spoken plain
The Lord alone… forever reigns
Outro — The Word Fulfilled
Lift the ban
