Jeremiah 47 delivers a swift oracle against the Philistines. Using flood imagery from the north, God portrays judgment as an overwhelming force that sweeps away cities, fields, and defenses. Human strength collapses under divine decree.
Specific coastal cities—Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ashdod—are named to ground the prophecy in real geography. The sea, once a perceived shield, becomes part of the scene of terror, underscoring that no natural barrier can stop God’s judgment.
The chapter closes with a poignant question—“How long?”—answered by God’s sovereignty. The sword cannot rest until the Lord’s purpose is complete. Judgment is not chaotic; it is commissioned.
Jeremiah 47 teaches that God’s authority extends beyond Israel to surrounding nations, and that when God charges His word, it will accomplish its task.
The Sword Will Not Rest” — Jeremiah 47
Verse 1 — From the North
Before Pharaoh struck the shore
The word of the Lord came once more
Waters rise from northern ground
A rushing flood with deafening sound
They sweep the land, the cities fall
The fields, the homes, consuming all
Men cry out, the fathers freeze
Hands go slack, no strength to seize
Chorus — The Flood Advances
From the north the waters roar
Nothing stands the rising force
City, field, and fortress strong
Washed away where they belong
When judgment moves like driven sea
Who can stop what’s decreed to be?
Verse 2 — Gaza and Ashkelon
The noise of hooves, the chariot’s spin
Wheels crash loud, the terror begins
Gaza shorn, Ashkelon still
Silent coast beneath the hill
The remnant fades along the shore
The sword has reached the door once more
No refuge left, no wall secure
The blow is fierce… the wound unsure
Chorus — Hands Hang Limp
The fathers do not turn around
To save the sons who hit the ground
The terror drains all strength and breath
The coast lies still beneath the death
When fear arrives at heaven’s call
The bravest hearts grow weak and small
Bridge — The Cry
“Ah, sword of the Lord, how long?”
Will You not rest? Will You not be gone?
Return to sheath, be still, be quiet
Let mercy end this crushing riot
But how can it rest when sent by God
Against the coast, against Ashdod?
When He commands, it must obey
Until His purpose clears the way
Verse 3 — No Escape
Shaving heads in mourning stand
Ashkelon’s people scar the land
Baldness spreads, the silence deep
The coastlands bow… the watchmen weep
The sea once thought a shield and wall
Now echoes doom along its call
The sword has work, it will not sleep
Till God completes what He decrees
Final Chorus — The Lord Has Charged It
The sword will not return in peace
Until the Lord commands it cease
Not chance nor rage nor human hand
But judgment moving by command
The word has gone, the charge is set
The Lord has spoken… do not forget
Outro — When the Order Ends
When God is done, the sword will rest
Until that day, it does its test
The coast, the sea, the shattered sand
All stand beneath the Lord’s command
