Three visitors, one of whom represents the Lord, come to Abraham’s tent near the oaks of Mamre. Abraham shows hospitality, and during the meal God promises that Sarah will bear a son within the year. Sarah laughs in disbelief, but God replies, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” As the visitors depart, God reveals His plan to judge Sodom, and Abraham intercedes for the city, appealing to God’s justice and mercy. This chapter displays both the intimacy and holiness of God—He fellowships with His servant and listens to his prayer, yet He remains the righteous Judge who cannot overlook evil.
