Jeremiah 26 records the first public trial of Jeremiah. God commands him to proclaim His message at the temple without omitting a single word. The warning is conditional: repentance can still avert judgment.
Religious leaders react with rage, accusing Jeremiah of treason and calling for his death. Jeremiah defends himself by pointing to his divine commission and warning that shedding innocent blood will only increase guilt.
The elders intervene by recalling the prophet Micah, whose similar warning in Hezekiah’s day led to repentance, not execution. Their appeal saves Jeremiah and affirms that responding rightly to God’s word brings mercy.
The chapter teaches that truth is often resisted, that obedience may invite danger, and that repentance — even late — can still change outcomes. God’s word stands, even when His messengers stand trial.
Do Not Hold Back” — Jeremiah 26
Verse 1 — The Charge to Speak
The word of the Lord came clear and plain
“Stand in My house and speak My name
Say every word I give to you
Do not hold back — speak what is true
Call them now to turn and change
To leave their ways, to walk My ways
Perhaps they’ll listen, perhaps they’ll see
And I will turn from what must be”
Chorus — The Conditional Call
Turn from your ways, hear the word
Obey the voice you’ve always heard
If you will listen, I will relent
If you refuse, the warning’s sent
The house you trust will fall like dust
Return to Me — because you must
Verse 2 — The Arrest
The priests and prophets seized my arm
“This man speaks doom — he means us harm
This house will fall, this city die
He speaks against the Lord,” they cry
The officials heard the rising sound
They came and sat where truth was bound
The charge was read before the gate
“Death to the man who prophesies fate”
Chorus — Truth on Trial
I did not come with words my own
The Lord Himself has overthrown
Your comfort lies, your hollow peace
The truth must speak — it will not cease
Judge me now, do as you will
But hear this word — I’m sent here still
Bridge — The Prophet’s Defense
The Lord sent me to speak these things
Against this house, against these kings
So change your ways, obey His voice
That mercy still may be your choice
As for me, I’m in your hands
Do what seems right — as you have planned
Only know if innocent blood
Is spilled today, it cries to God
Verse 3 — The Elders Remember
The elders rose and spoke the past
“In Micah’s days, these words were cast
Zion would fall, the temple burn
Yet Hezekiah chose to turn
He feared the Lord, he sought His face
And God withheld the coming waste
Should we now bring a greater wrong
By killing truth we’ve known so long?”
Final Chorus — The Word Stands
The word of God cannot be chained
Though prophets bleed and truth is blamed
Those who repent will surely live
For mercy still the Lord will give
The verdict waits on hearts that hear
Choose life… while God is near
Outro — History Watches
Some who spoke were struck and slain
Yet truth outlived their pain
The Lord remembers every word
He spoke… and still He’s heard
