Jeremiah 25 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Jeremiah 25 marks a major turning point in the book by establishing God’s timetable for judgment. After decades of ignored warnings, God declares that Judah will serve Babylon for seventy years. This exile is not random political collapse — it is measured, purposeful discipline determined by God.

Babylon, led by Nebuchadnezzar, is named as God’s instrument for this season. Yet Babylon is not exempt from judgment. When its appointed time ends, God promises to judge Babylon as well, proving that no empire stands above divine authority.

The chapter expands beyond Judah to include all nations. Through the image of the cup of wrath, God reveals that His judgment will extend across the world. Jerusalem drinks first, but the cup passes to every kingdom, showing God’s universal sovereignty.

Jeremiah 25 teaches that history is not chaotic. God sets boundaries, durations, and outcomes. Judgment is real, but it is never uncontrolled — and beyond discipline lies restoration when God’s purposes are complete.

The Cup of Wrath” — Jeremiah 25

Verse 1 — The Long Warning

For twenty-three years I spoke My word

Early and often — still unheard

From Josiah’s days to this dark hour

You would not listen, would not bow

I sent My servants time and time

To call you back, to draw the line

Turn from your ways, from evil ground

But deafened hearts would not turn around

Chorus — The Seventy Years

Because you would not hear My voice

You chose this road, you made this choice

This land will rest, lie bare and still

Seventy years by sovereign will

Babylon rules for appointed days

Then judgment comes their way

Verse 2 — Babylon the Instrument

I summon Nebuchadnezzar now

My servant for this season’s vow

Against this land and all around

I bring the sword to break the ground

You will serve the king you fear

Till time is full and judgment’s clear

Then I will turn My hand again

And Babylon will answer for its sin

Chorus — The Appointed Time

Nations rise and nations fall

None escape the Sovereign call

I set the length, I name the span

History rests within My plan

The Lord who speaks, the Lord who reigns

Counts the years… commands the chains

Bridge — The Cup Given

Take this cup from out My hand

Make all the nations understand

They will drink and stagger so

Because of judgment I bestow

Jerusalem first, then every land

From Pharaoh’s throne to distant sand

All the kingdoms far and wide

Will drink the cup — none denied

Verse 3 — The Roar of the Lord

The Lord will roar from Zion’s height

Thunder judgment day and night

Against His pasture He will cry

The storm breaks loose across the sky

The noise reaches earth’s far end

For judgment comes on foe and friend

The wicked fall, no peace is found

Their bodies lie upon the ground

Final Chorus — The Lord of History

The cup is poured, the word is sure

No refuge stands, no wall secure

Yet every step, each rising tide

Moves within what God has tied

Judgment speaks, but mercy waits

Beyond the years… beyond the gates

Outro — When the Years Are Full

When seventy years have reached their close

The Lord will act — the story turns

What He has spoken will be done

The Sovereign reigns… the end begun
