Jeremiah 23 confronts false leadership and false prophecy while unveiling one of Scripture’s clearest promises of a future righteous King. God condemns the shepherds — kings, leaders, and prophets — who scattered His people through neglect, abuse, and lies. Their failure is not merely political; it is spiritual.
In contrast, God promises to personally gather His scattered people and raise up faithful shepherds. At the center of this hope stands the Righteous Branch, a descendant of David who will reign with justice and righteousness. This King’s defining name — The Lord Our Righteousness — reveals that salvation will come not from human reform, but from God’s own righteousness given to His people.
The chapter then exposes false prophets who claim divine dreams while speaking from their own hearts. God sharply distinguishes between empty words (straw) and His true word (wheat), declaring that His word is like fire and a hammer — powerful, purifying, and unavoidable.
Jeremiah 23 teaches that God Himself will correct failed leadership, silence false voices, and provide a Shepherd-King who truly saves. Judgment and hope stand side by side, preparing the way for the coming Messiah.
The Righteous Branch” — Jeremiah 23
Verse 1 — Woe to the Shepherds
Woe to the shepherds who scatter My sheep
You drove them away, you failed to keep
You did not attend to what I saw
So I will attend to you — says God
You ruled yourselves, not My command
You broke the flock with careless hands
Because you would not guard their way
I call you now to answer Me today
Chorus — God Will Gather
I will gather what you scattered wide
Bring them home from every side
I will tend them, I will care
No one lost beneath My care
I will raise them, they will thrive
None afraid, none left behind
Verse 2 — The Promised King
The days will come — the Lord has sworn
A righteous Branch from David born
A King who reigns with justice true
And does what’s right in all He’ll do
In His days Judah will be saved
Israel dwell secure and brave
And this the name by which He’s known:
The Lord Our Righteousness alone
Chorus — The Better Exodus
No longer just from Egypt’s chain
But from the lands of loss and pain
The Lord who lives will bring them through
From every place where they once knew
Exile, fear, and broken ground
Home again — safe and sound
Bridge — The Lying Dreams
The prophets speak what hearts invent
They run, though I was never sent
They say, “I dreamed,” but speak their will
Their lies make foolish people still
If they had stood within My truth
They would have turned the hearts of youth
But straw is all their words can be
What has straw to do with wheat?
Verse 3 — The Word of the Lord
My word is fire, says the Lord
A hammer breaking hardened stone
Not whispers shaped to ease your fear
But truth that calls the wayward near
I am against the prophets’ lies
Who steal My words and blind the eyes
They twist My name for gain and praise
But judgment waits their crooked ways
Final Chorus — The True Shepherd
I will gather, I will keep
I will shepherd all My sheep
Not by lies or borrowed peace
But truth that sets the captives free
One true King will rightly stand
Righteousness within His hand
Outro — The Weight of the Word
Who can stand before this flame?
Who can bear the truth it names?
The Lord has spoken — clear and sure
His word endures… His word endures
