Jeremiah 18 — Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Jeremiah 18 explains God’s sovereignty using a simple, visual picture. The potter reshapes clay that becomes flawed while still on the wheel. This shows that God is not forced to finish what is broken — He can remake it according to His purpose.

God clearly states the principle: judgment can be withheld if people repent, and blessing can be withdrawn if people rebel. God’s authority does not remove human responsibility. Choices matter while the clay is still pliable.

Judah refuses this warning, declaring that repentance is pointless and choosing stubborn independence instead. This decision turns a message of hope into a declaration of judgment.

The chapter ends with personal cost. Jeremiah, who faithfully delivered God’s word and prayed for the people, becomes a target. He entrusts justice to God, showing that obedience may bring opposition — but God remains the final Judge

On the Potter’s Wheel” — Jeremiah 18 (Clear Version)

Verse 1 — The Lesson Shown

The Lord said, “Go where the potter works,

Watch with your eyes, learn how it turns.”

I saw the clay upon the wheel,

Shaped by hands both firm and skilled.

The vessel failed while still being formed,

So he pressed it down and reshaped the form.

He made it new as he saw best,

The potter chose — the clay confessed.

Chorus — God’s Authority

Can I not do what the potter can?

You are the clay within My hand.

I shape, I break, I build again,

According to My righteous plan.

Yield while you’re soft, while time remains,

Do not resist the shaping hand.

Verse 2 — What the Parable Means

When I declare that judgment comes,

If a nation turns, I change what’s done.

When I promise good and plans to bless,

If you turn away, I pull it back.

I am forming something even now,

I am shaping — hear Me now:

Turn from evil, change your way,

While you are still upon the clay.

Chorus — The Call to Turn

Turn from your ways, return today,

Let Me shape you, do not say

“It’s too late now, we’ve gone too far,”

The wheel is turning where you are.

Repentance keeps the clay made new,

Refusal hardens what I do.

Bridge — The Refusal Spoken

But they replied, “There is no hope.

We’ll walk the path our hearts have chose.

Each one follows stubborn plans,

We will not yield to God’s command.”

Has any nation heard such a thing?

My people traded everything —

Left the living, faithful way

For paths that fade and drift away.

Verse 3 — The Cost of Truth

They said, “Let us silence him,

Strike the prophet with tongue and scheme.

The law will stand, the priests will speak,

We don’t need words that make us weak.”

Remember me, O Lord, and see,

I stood for them, I prayed for peace.

Good was returned with plots and pits,

Now I place my cause with You, who judge it.

Final Chorus — Justice with God

I trust the Judge who knows the heart,

Who sees the truth behind each part.

They may fight, but they won’t prevail,

Your purpose stands, Your truth won’t fail.

The wheel still turns by sovereign will,

You shape the willing — You always will.

Outro — The Choice That Remains

The potter waits, the clay is near,

Soft enough now — the choice is clear.

Yield and live, or harden fast,

The shape you choose is what will last.
