When years pass without a child, Sarai gives her servant Hagar to Abram in an attempt to fulfill God’s promise by human means. Hagar conceives, leading to jealousy and strife. She flees into the desert, but God meets her there, calling her by name and promising to bless her son, Ishmael. Humbled and comforted, Hagar names the Lord “the God who sees me.” This chapter warns against impatience and self-reliance, showing that God’s purposes are accomplished through faith, not manipulation. It also reveals God’s compassion toward the marginalized and His care for every person in His plan.
