Jeremiah 11 returns to the foundational covenant made at the Exodus. God reminds Judah that obedience was always the condition of blessing. The covenant was not hidden or unclear — it was spoken plainly and reinforced repeatedly through the prophets.
The tragedy of the chapter is not ignorance, but refusal. The people knowingly reject God’s commands and turn to idolatry, expecting protection without obedience. As a result, judgment is not arbitrary; it is the fulfillment of covenant warnings they agreed to long ago.
The chapter shifts from national indictment to personal cost. Jeremiah discovers a plot against his life by people from his own hometown, Anathoth. His faithful obedience has made him a target. The image of a lamb led to slaughter reveals Jeremiah’s vulnerability and innocence.
Yet Jeremiah does not seek revenge. He entrusts himself to God, the righteous Judge who sees motives and administers justice rightly. Jeremiah 11 teaches that faithfulness may invite opposition, but God remains faithful to both His covenant and His servants.
The Broken Covenant” — Jeremiah 11
Verse 1 — The Covenant Remembered
Hear the words I spoke long ago
The oath you swore, the path you know
Obey My voice, walk in My way
Be My people — I your God today
I brought you out with mighty hand
From iron fire, from Egypt’s land
I said, “Obey, and you will live”
This is the life I long to give
Chorus — The Covenant Terms
Listen to My voice and live
Walk the way I freely give
But cursed is the one who turns away
And will not hear the words I say
I warned your fathers day by day
Yet still you would not obey
Verse 2 — The Covenant Broken
Each one walked in stubborn will
Chasing thoughts that bent to ill
They turned their backs, not their face
They ran from truth, despised My grace
So I brought upon this land
Every word My oath had planned
They cry to gods that cannot save
But silence answers when they pray
Chorus — The Silence of Judgment
Do not pray for them, My son
Their time to turn has come and gone
Though they cry aloud in pain
I will not hear — not now, not then
For they have chosen other names
And burned for gods of wood and flame
Bridge — The Green Tree Burned
What right has My beloved here
To stand and worship without fear
While vows are broken, love betrayed
And holy trust is mocked and frayed?
I named you once a thriving tree
With fruit and oil abundantly
But thunder calls, the branches burn
Your beauty fades — no quick return
Verse 3 — The Plot Revealed
I did not know their whispered plans
Until You showed me hidden hands
Like gentle lamb led unaware
They sought my life with secret prayer
“Let us destroy the tree,” they said
“Erase his name when he is dead”
But You, O Lord, who judge the heart
You saw the end before the start
Final Chorus — Trust in the Judge
I place my cause in Your command
The righteous Judge who understands
You test the heart, You weigh the mind
You see the truth they try to hide
I will not fear the schemes they raise
My hope is in Your righteous ways
Outro — Awaiting Justice
I’ll wait to see Your justice rise
In Your right time, before their eyes
For You have heard my silent plea
The Lord of Hosts will answer me
