Zechariah 13 Teaching Notes / Biblical Summary

Zechariah 13 follows repentance with purification. God opens a fountain to cleanse sin and impurity, signaling complete forgiveness. This cleansing is not partial — it reaches deep into personal and communal life.

False prophecy and deception are removed, even at great personal cost. Truth becomes more valuable than reputation or tradition.

The chapter then turns severe and prophetic: God declares that His Shepherd will be struck, scattering the sheep. Yet even through judgment, a remnant is refined, restored, and reaffirmed as God’s people.

Christ-Foreshadowing

Zechariah 13 unmistakably points to Christ.
The opened fountain anticipates the cleansing power of Jesus’ sacrifice. The Shepherd struck directly foreshadows Christ’s death, quoted by Jesus Himself regarding His disciples’ scattering.

The wounds received “in the house of my friends” echo the betrayal and suffering of Christ. Through His striking, the people are cleansed and restored.

Zechariah 13 — A Fountain Opened

Verse 1 — The Fountain

On that day a fountain will flow
For the house of David’s need
For Jerusalem’s uncleanness
A cleansing stream indeed
Not hidden, not withheld
But opened wide and free
For sin and for impurity
A gift of mercy

Chorus — Washed Clean

A fountain opened — flowing still
To wash away our stain
No guilt too deep, no mark too dark
For mercy’s cleansing rain

Verse 2 — Truth Restored

On that day, declares the Lord
I will remove the idols’ names
They will be remembered no more
Erased from heart and frame
I will banish prophets false
And spirits that deceive
Even parents will confront
The lies they once believed

Pre-Chorus

Truth will matter more than blood
Loyalty bows before the Lord

Chorus — Washed Clean

A fountain opened — flowing still
To wash away our stain
No guilt too deep, no mark too dark
For mercy’s cleansing rain

Verse 3 — Costly Honesty

If anyone still prophesies
His father and mother will say
“You shall not live — you lie in God’s name”
The false word ends that day
No borrowed cloak, no prophet’s robe
To hide a former lie
“I am no prophet — I till the ground
I was trained from youth to try”

Bridge — The Wounds

And if one asks, “What are these wounds
Between your hands?”
He will answer quietly,
“Wounds I received in the house of my friends”

Verse 4 — The Shepherd Struck

Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd
Against the One who stands close to Me
Strike the Shepherd — the sheep will scatter
This is My decree
Two-thirds will fall, one-third refined
Through fire, tested, tried
They will call on My name
And I will answer — “You are Mine”

Final Chorus — Refined

Washed in mercy, tried by flame
Truth remains when lies are gone
The Shepherd struck, the flock made clean
Through loss, through grace, reborn

Outro — The Answer

They will say, “The Lord is our God.”
And He will say, “They are My people.”
