Zechariah 12 declares God’s decisive defense of Jerusalem against hostile nations. The chapter emphasizes God as Creator and Protector, ensuring that no opposing power can prevail against His purposes.
Yet the chapter’s center is not military victory, but spiritual awakening. God pours out a spirit of grace and supplication, leading the people to recognize the One they pierced. This recognition produces genuine repentance — personal, communal, and deeply sincere.
Deliverance begins externally but completes internally, as hearts are finally aligned with God.
Zechariah 12 directly foreshadows Christ’s crucifixion. The pierced One is both divine (“they will look on Me”) and rejected by the people.
The mourning anticipates the realization that Jesus, once rejected, is the very One through whom salvation comes. Repentance flows not from fear, but from grace poured out by God Himself.
Zechariah 12 — They Will Look on the One They Pierced
Verse 1 — The Lord Declares
A burden, the word of the Lord
Concerning Israel’s fate
The One who stretched the heavens wide
Who laid earth’s firm foundation straight
Who formed the spirit within mankind
Speaks now — Creator, King
What He declares will surely stand
All things bend to Him
Chorus — The Lord Defends
I will make Jerusalem
A cup that makes the nations reel
A heavy stone none can lift
Without being crushed beneath
I will defend Jerusalem
In that day
Verse 2 — Nations Gather
All the nations gather round
Against the city I have claimed
But when they rise with hostile hands
They only wound themselves in vain
I will strike the horses blind
The riders struck with fear
Yet I will watch with open eyes
And guard My people here
Pre-Chorus
What stands by Me will stand secure
What fights Me will not endure
Chorus — The Lord Defends
I will make Jerusalem
A cup that makes the nations reel
A heavy stone none can lift
Without being crushed beneath
I will defend Jerusalem
In that day
Verse 3 — Strength Given
The weakest will be strong as David
The house of David like their God
Like the Angel of the Lord before them
When the battle presses hard
I will seek to destroy all nations
That come against My land
Not by their strength — but by My hand
Bridge — The Turning
Then I will pour out
A spirit of grace and supplication
They will look on Me — the One they pierced
And mourn with deep lamentation
As one mourns an only son
Grief bitter, unrestrained
A nation breaks before the truth
And weeps in His name
Verse 4 — The Mourning
The land will mourn — each family
Apart, yet all the same
The house of David, Nathan’s line
Each bearing private pain
No shallow tears, no borrowed grief
No blame cast far away
Each heart undone before the Lord
In quiet, broken ways
Final Chorus — Open Eyes
They will look upon the One they pierced
And hearts will finally see
The strength that saved them from the sword
Now saves them inwardly
Grace poured out, repentance born
The pierced One stands revealed
Outro — The Pause
They looked.
They mourned.
Grace was poured out.
