Judges 16 recounts Samson’s downfall. After escaping a trap in Gaza by carrying away the city gates, Samson falls in love with Delilah. The Philistine leaders pay her to discover the secret of his strength. After repeated attempts, Samson reveals the truth: he is a Nazarite, and his strength is tied to the vow symbolized by his uncut hair. Delilah shaves his hair as he sleeps, the Lord departs from him, and he is captured, blinded, and imprisoned. During a Philistine celebration, Samson prays for strength one final time and brings down the temple, killing more in his death than in his life. The chapter shows the cost of compromise and God’s ability to work through broken vessels.
