Fleeing from Saul, David went to Nob and met Ahimelek the priest, who trembled when he saw him alone. David requested food, and Ahimelek, unaware of David’s true situation, gave him the consecrated bread of the Presence since the men David claimed to be meeting were ceremonially clean. David also requested a weapon, and Ahimelek gave him Goliath’s sword, which had been stored there. But Doeg the Edomite, a servant of Saul, witnessed everything. David then fled to Gath, where the Philistines recognized him and questioned why their enemy’s champion was in their city. In fear, David pretended insanity, scribbling on doors and letting saliva run down his beard, leading King Achish to dismiss him as harmless. The chapter chronicles David’s desperation, the dangers surrounding him, and God’s preservation even in humiliating circumstances.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
David’s humiliation and rejection in a foreign land foreshadow Christ, who was despised, misunderstood, and took the form of a servant to fulfill the Father’s purposes.
