- "1 Corinthians 14".
- "1 Corinthians 14".
Paul applies the principle of love to public worship and spiritual gifts. He emphasizes that gifts must strengthen and build up the church.
Prophecy is highlighted because it communicates understandable truth that encourages, comforts, and instructs believers. Tongues, unless interpreted, mainly benefit the speaker and can create confusion in public gatherings.
Paul repeatedly stresses order, clarity, and self-control in worship. God is not the author of confusion but of peace. Spiritual experiences should never produce disorder or chaos within the church.
The chapter closes with balance: believers should desire spiritual gifts and not forbid tongues, but everything must be done decently and in order.

1 Corinthians 14
(Verse 1)
Pursue love —
And earnestly desire spiritual gifts,
Especially that you may prophesy.
For the one who speaks in a tongue
Speaks not to men but to God —
Mysteries uttered in the Spirit.
But the one who prophesies
Speaks to people
For strengthening, encouragement, and comfort.
(Chorus)
Let all things build.
Let all things strengthen.
Not confusion —
But understanding.
For God is not a God of disorder,
But of peace.
(Verse 2)
The one who speaks in a tongue
Builds himself up —
But the one who prophesies
Builds up the church.
I want you all to speak in tongues —
But even more to prophesy,
Unless someone interprets,
So the church may be edified.
(Verse 3)
If I come speaking in tongues alone,
What benefit is that to you
Unless I bring revelation,
Knowledge, prophecy, or teaching?
Even instruments must give clear notes —
Otherwise no one knows the song.
(Verse 4)
So pray for interpretation.
Pray with the spirit —
But also with the mind.
Sing with the spirit —
And with understanding.
Let your “Amen” be shared
By those who hear and know.
(Bridge)
In the assembly,
Let there be order.
Two or three speak —
Others weigh what is said.
If revelation comes,
Let one speak at a time.
The spirits of prophets
Are subject to prophets.
(Verse 5)
Women and men alike
Must honor order in worship —
Not chaos, not interruption,
But learning in peace.
For God’s Word is not shaped by us —
We are shaped by it.
(Ending)
So earnestly desire to prophesy.
Do not forbid speaking in tongues.
But let all things be done
Decently
And in order.
