1 Corinthians 13

Paul explains that love is greater than every spiritual gift. Speaking in tongues, prophecy, knowledge, faith, sacrifice, and generosity are all meaningless if love is absent.

Love is described not as emotion alone but as godly character expressed through patience, kindness, humility, truthfulness, endurance, and selflessness.

Paul contrasts temporary spiritual gifts with eternal realities. Prophecies, tongues, and partial knowledge belong to the present age and will one day cease. Love, however, never fails.

The chapter concludes by declaring that faith, hope, and love remain — but love is the greatest because it reflects God’s own nature.

If I speak with tongues of men

Or even angels’ speech,

But have not love within my heart,

My words are hollow sound —

A clanging noise without a soul.

(Verse 2)

If I possess prophetic sight,

Understand all mysteries,

Hold knowledge vast and faith so strong

That mountains move at my command —

But have not love,

I am nothing.

(Verse 3)

If I give away all I own,

If I surrender even my body,

Yet love does not shape what I do —

It gains me nothing.

(Chorus)

Love is patient.

Love is kind.

It does not envy.

It does not boast.

It is not proud.

It is not rude.

It does not seek its own.

It is not easily angered.

It keeps no record of wrongs.

Love rejoices in truth.

(Verse 4)

It bears all things.

Believes all things.

Hopes all things.

Endures all things.

Love never fails.

(Verse 5)

Prophecies will pass away.

Tongues will cease.

Knowledge will fade.

For now we know in part.

Now we see dimly, as in a mirror.

(Bridge)

But when the perfect comes,

The partial will pass.

Now I know in part —

Then I shall know fully,

Even as I am fully known.

(Ending)

So now remain:

Faith, hope, and love —

These three.

But the greatest of these

Is love.
