Paul uses Israel’s wilderness journey as a warning to the Corinthian church. Though Israel experienced God’s deliverance, provision, and presence, many still fell into idolatry, immorality, testing God, and complaining. Spiritual experiences alone did not guarantee faithfulness.
Paul reminds believers to remain humble and watchful. Those who think they stand securely must be careful not to fall. Temptation is common to all people, but God is faithful and always provides a way to endure without giving in to sin.
The chapter strongly warns against idolatry and divided loyalty. Participation in the Lord’s table represents fellowship with Christ, so believers cannot also participate in pagan worship practices.
The final principle governs Christian freedom: everything should be done for the glory of God and for the spiritual good of others.

Brothers and sisters, remember this:
Our fathers walked beneath the cloud.
They passed safely through the sea.
They followed Moses in the wilderness.
All ate the same spiritual food.
All drank from the spiritual Rock —
And that Rock was Christ.

Yet most of them fell in the desert.
Though they saw miracles,
Though they tasted provision,
Their hearts chased desire.
They craved what God withheld.
They bowed before idols.
They tested the Lord.
They grumbled against His hand.

These things were written for us —
So we would not fall as they did.
If you think you are standing firm,
Take heed.
Temptation will come —
But God is faithful.
He will provide a way
To endure and stand.

Do not be idolaters.
Do not pursue immorality.
Do not test Christ’s patience.
Do not complain against His care.
Judgment came swiftly then —
And the warning still speaks now.

So flee from idolatry.
Run from divided loyalty.
The cup we bless
Is participation in Christ’s blood.
The bread we break
Is sharing in His body.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord
And the cup of demons.
You cannot share His table
And the table of idols.

But not all things build the narrow way.
Not all things strengthen faith.
Not all things guard a brother’s soul.
Seek not your own advantage,
But the good of others.
Walk the narrow road
That leads to life.
