David seeks to honor his covenant with Jonathan by showing kindness to any living descendant of Saul. He learns of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s crippled son, living in fear and obscurity. David brings him to Jerusalem, restores all Saul’s land to him, and gives him a permanent place at the king’s table “like a son.” Mephibosheth receives undeserved favor, symbolizing grace upon the broken. This chapter reveals David’s loyal love and the beauty of covenant kindness.
Foreshadowing of Christ: David raising Mephibosheth to his table reflects Christ, who seats spiritually crippled sinners at His table of grace as beloved sons and daughters.
