All the tribes of Israel unite and anoint David as king over the entire nation, fulfilling God’s long-promised purpose. David captures Jerusalem from the Jebusites and establishes it as the City of David. Hiram of Tyre sends cedar and craftsmen to build David’s palace, and David recognizes that the Lord has exalted him for Israel’s sake. When the Philistines attack, David seeks God’s direction twice, receiving victory first through direct assault and second through waiting for the supernatural sound of marching in the treetops—a sign that God Himself was leading the battle. God establishes David as the shepherd-king over Israel.
Foreshadowing of Christ: David reigning over a united kingdom points to Christ, the eternal King who reigns from the New Jerusalem over all nations.
