David orders a census of Israel, against God’s will, reflecting human pride and misplaced confidence in numbers rather than divine protection. After the count is completed, David is convicted in his heart and confesses his sin. Through the prophet Gad, God gives David a choice of three judgments, and David chooses to fall into God’s mercy rather than human hands. A devastating plague sweeps through Israel until God stops the angel at the threshing floor of Araunah. David buys the land, builds an altar, and offers sacrifices—and the plague is halted. That threshing floor becomes the future site of Solomon’s temple.
Foreshadowing of Christ: The plague ending through sacrifice points to Christ, whose perfect offering becomes the final and complete atonement, ending the judgment of sin.
