A famine strikes Israel for three years, and God reveals it is due to Saul’s violent violation of a covenant with the Gibeonites. To bring justice, David allows the Gibeonites to execute seven descendants of Saul. Rizpah, a grieving mother, keeps vigil over the bodies until David gives them an honorable burial alongside Saul and Jonathan. Afterward, God ends the famine. The chapter also records heroic battles with Philistine giants, showing God continuing to defend David’s kingdom through the courage of his warriors.
Foreshadowing of Christ: The need for atonement to end judgment points to Christ, who became the perfect sacrifice to reconcile humanity to God once and for all.
