After Absalom’s death, David mourns so intensely that Joab rebukes him, warning that the troops may desert if their victory remains overshadowed by grief. David then takes his seat at the gate, acknowledging the people’s loyalty. Israel debates bringing David back as king, and Judah eventually leads the way. David mercifully spares Shimei, who had cursed him earlier, and shows kindness to Mephibosheth, whose loyalty is affirmed despite Ziba’s lies. David also rewards Barzillai for supporting him in exile. The chapter highlights the difficult work of restoring unity after division, showing David’s mercy and wisdom as he returns to Jerusalem.
Foreshadowing of Christ: David’s restoration and mercy foreshadow Christ’s return as the true King, who brings reconciliation, forgiveness, and unity to His divided people.
