David organizes his troops and insists on treating Absalom gently, though his commanders know the grim reality of war. The battle takes place in the forest of Ephraim, where the terrain claims more lives than the sword. Absalom, caught by his hair in the branches of a great oak, dangles helplessly as his mule rides on. Joab, ignoring David’s plea, kills Absalom, and his men bury him under a heap of stones. Messengers race to tell David, but when he hears the news, he collapses in one of the most emotional cries in Scripture: “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! Would God I had died for thee!” His grief reveals the deep cost of sin and rebellion.
Foreshadowing of Christ: David’s cry for his son echoes the greater love of Christ, who did lay down His life for His rebellious children, turning tragedy into redemption.
