Ahithophel advises Absalom to pursue David immediately with twelve thousand men, promising a quick victory before David regains strength. But God uses Hushai, David’s friend, to undermine the plan. Hushai urges Absalom to gather all Israel, claiming David is fierce and will fight back. God ordains that Absalom accepts Hushai’s counsel, ensuring Ahithophel’s plan fails. Hushai discreetly sends word to David through priests’ sons Jonathan and Ahimaaz, who narrowly escape danger. When Ahithophel sees his advice rejected, he sets his affairs in order and takes his own life. David crosses the Jordan to safety as supporters bring food and supplies. The chapter reveals God’s unseen hand guiding events to preserve David.
Foreshadowing of Christ: Just as God overturned the counsel of the wicked to save His anointed, Christ would triumph over the schemes against Him, fulfilling God’s sovereign plan of salvation.
