Absalom steals the hearts of Israel by standing at the city gate, speaking warmly to the people, and subtly undermining David’s leadership. After years of quiet influence, he asks permission to go to Hebron—using a vow as cover for rebellion. There he declares himself king, and the conspiracy gains strength. When word reaches David, he chooses to flee Jerusalem rather than plunge the city into war. Barefoot and weeping, he climbs the Mount of Olives with loyal followers. Zadok brings the ark, but David sends it back, trusting God entirely with the outcome. Hushai meets David, and the king sends him back into Jerusalem to thwart Absalom’s counsel. The chapter is filled with betrayal, sorrow, and faith as David entrusts his future to the Lord.
Foreshadowing of Christ: David’s tearful ascent of the Mount of Olives foreshadows Jesus walking the same hill on the night of His betrayal, submitting Himself to the Father’s will amid deep sorrow.
