In-Depth Summary
Peter opens by affirming that believers share an equally precious faith through the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Salvation is not tiered — it is rooted entirely in Christ’s merit.
He declares that God’s divine power has granted everything needed for life and godliness. Nothing essential for spiritual maturity is lacking. Through God’s promises, believers escape corruption and become “partakers of the divine nature” — meaning they share in transformed character shaped by God’s holiness, not in divine essence.
Peter then presents a progression of spiritual growth: Faith → Virtue → Knowledge → Self-control → Perseverance → Godliness → Brotherly affection → Love.
Growth confirms calling. Lack of growth reveals spiritual blindness and forgetfulness of cleansing from past sin.
Peter urges diligence — not to earn salvation, but to confirm it. A growing life provides assurance and stability.
He then defends apostolic authority. The gospel is not myth. Peter personally witnessed Christ’s glory at the Transfiguration and heard the Father’s voice.
Finally, he affirms the reliability of Scripture: prophecy did not originate in human will but was carried along by the Holy Spirit.
This chapter establishes: True faith grows. True doctrine is reliable. Christ’s glory is eyewitnessed. Scripture is Spirit-breathed.
Christ is:
Growth and assurance are anchored entirely in Him.
2 Peter 1 — “Make Your Calling Sure”
2 Peter 1
Verse 1
To those who share a faith as ours,
Righteous gift through Jesus’ power.
Grace and peace be multiplied
Through knowing Him who satisfied.
His divine power has supplied
All we need for life inside —
Godliness through knowing Him
Who called us out from former sin.
Chorus
Precious promises now stand,
Escape corruption’s fallen land.
Partakers of the nature true,
Growing strong in what we pursue.
Make your calling firm and sure —
In Christ alone secure.
Verse 2
Add to faith a virtue formed,
Knowledge shaped and self-controlled.
Perseverance standing long,
Godliness in trial strong.
Brotherly affection grown,
Love that marks the fully known.
If these abound and truly live,
They keep your faith from being thin.
Pre-Chorus
But who forgets what Christ has done
Is near-sighted to the Son.
Verse 3
Cleansed from former sins once borne,
Yet walking as if blind and torn.
So strive, be diligent and sure —
These things will help you endure.
For entrance wide will be supplied
Into kingdom glorified.
Bridge — Eyewitness Glory
We did not follow myths of men,
But saw His majesty then.
On holy mount His glory shone,
Voice from heaven made Him known:
“This is My beloved Son.”
We were there — the chosen One.
Verse 4 — The Word Confirmed
More sure than sight the prophets speak,
Lamp in darkness for the weak.
Until the Morning Star shall rise
And dawn break open blinded eyes.
No prophecy by man was made —
But Spirit-borne, by God conveyed.
Final Chorus
Hold to promises that endure,
Scripture steadfast, firm and sure.
Grow in Christ and do not fall —
His Word the anchor over all.
