Elijah’s final journey leads him with Elisha from Gilgal to Jericho to the Jordan. After Elijah parts the Jordan with his mantle, a whirlwind and fiery chariots take him into heaven. Elisha receives a double portion of his spirit and immediately confirms God’s power by parting the Jordan, healing Jericho’s water, and pronouncing judgment on youths who mock God’s prophet. This chapter marks the transfer of prophetic authority and God’s continued guidance of Israel. Christ-Foreshadowing: Elijah’s ascension and the passing of his spirit foreshadow Christ’s ascension and the giving of the Holy Spirit to empower His followers.
