Hezekiah responds to Assyria’s threats by tearing his clothes, seeking Isaiah the prophet, and praying earnestly. Isaiah delivers God’s message: Assyria will not enter Jerusalem. God has heard Hezekiah’s prayer and will defend the city for His name’s sake. That night, the angel of the Lord strikes down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, and King Sennacherib returns home in defeat, only to be killed by his sons. The chapter displays God’s absolute sovereignty over the nations and His response to humble prayer.
Christ-Foreshadowing: God defeating Israel’s enemy with a single act foreshadows Christ’s victory over sin and death—an enemy far greater than any earthly army.
