This is the pivotal chapter where the northern kingdom of Israel falls to Assyria. Hoshea is the final king, and after rebelling against Assyria, the nation is conquered and exiled. The narrator gives a theological explanation: Israel fell because they persisted in the sins of Jeroboam, practiced idolatry, rejected the prophets, and hardened their hearts against God’s covenant. Assyria resettles foreign peoples into Samaria, creating a mixed population that fears the Lord superficially while worshiping idols. Israel’s fall stands as a solemn warning about the cost of rejecting God’s Word.
Christ-Foreshadowing: Israel’s exile highlights humanity’s need for a Redeemer who brings us back from spiritual exile—Christ, who gathers scattered people into God’s kingdom.
