This chapter rapidly shifts through multiple kings, showing Israel’s instability. Azariah (Uzziah) of Judah reigns long and successfully, but he becomes leprous after pride leads him to violate God’s holiness. Meanwhile, Israel cycles through kings Zechariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, and Pekah—most ruling briefly and violently. Menahem pays heavy tribute to Assyria, beginning Israel’s decline under foreign power. Judah’s Jotham reigns with steadiness and seeks to do what is right. The turbulence in Israel reveals the nation’s unraveling as Assyria rises in dominance.
Christ-Foreshadowing: The chaos of unfaithful kings points to the need for Christ—the stable, righteous King whose kingdom cannot be shaken.
