Amaziah becomes king of Judah and initially follows the Lord partially, though not wholeheartedly. He executes the officials who murdered his father but spares their children according to God’s law. After defeating Edom, pride leads him to challenge Israel’s King Jehoash, resulting in Judah’s defeat and Jerusalem’s walls being broken. Later, Jeroboam II reigns over Israel, expanding its borders according to prophecy, despite Israel’s ongoing sin. Through this mixture of success and rebellion, God continues to show mercy because He sees the affliction of His people.
Christ-Foreshadowing: Israel’s need for a righteous king greater than Amaziah or Jeroboam points forward to Christ, the humble and faithful King who leads His people into true victory.
