After King Ahaziah falls through a lattice and is injured, he sends messengers to inquire of BaalZebub rather than the Lord. Elijah intercepts them and declares that because Ahaziah sought a false god, he will die. Ahaziah sends three groups of soldiers to capture Elijah; fire from heaven consumes the first two groups, but the third captain humbles himself and is spared. Elijah goes to the king, repeats God’s judgment, and Ahaziah dies without an heir. Christ-Foreshadowing: Elijah’s authority and the fire reveal God’s holiness; Christ brings that same authority but offers mercy to all who humbly come to Him.
