2 Corinthians 9

Paul encourages readiness and sincerity in completing the offering.

Giving must be voluntary — decided in the heart — not pressured. God values cheerful generosity.

The sowing and reaping imagery emphasizes proportional return, not guaranteed wealth. The harvest described is righteousness and thanksgiving, not material excess.

God promises sufficiency — enough provision to continue doing good works. The enrichment mentioned is for generosity, not self-indulgence.

The result of faithful giving is:

  • Needs met
  • God glorified
  • Thanksgiving multiplied
  • Unity strengthened

Paul closes with praise to God for His ultimate gift — likely referring to Christ.

Major themes:

  • Willing generosity
  • Cheerful giving
  • God’s sufficiency for obedience
  • Spiritual harvest
  • Thanksgiving and glory to God

Christ Foreshadowing — 2 Corinthians 9 (Condensed)

This chapter culminates in “God’s indescribable gift.”

All generosity flows from Christ — the greatest gift given. As the sower supplies seed, so God supplied His Son.

The harvest of righteousness finds its root in the righteousness secured through Christ.

He is the gift beyond measure,
the source of grace,
and the One who turns generosity
into worship.

2 Corinthians 9

(Verse 1)

Concerning the ministry

To the saints —

I know your readiness.

I have boasted of you to Macedonia,

Saying that Achaia

Has been ready since last year.

And your zeal has stirred many.

(Verse 2)

I am sending the brothers ahead

So our boasting will not prove empty.

Be prepared —

Not as if forced,

But as a willing gift.

(Chorus)

Whoever sows sparingly

Will reap sparingly.

Whoever sows generously

Will reap generously.

Each must give

As he has decided in his heart —

Not reluctantly,

Not under compulsion —

For God loves

A cheerful giver.

(Verse 3)

And God is able

To make all grace abound to you,

So that having all sufficiency

In all things at all times,

You may abound

In every good work.

(Verse 4)

As it is written:

“He has distributed freely,

He has given to the poor;

His righteousness endures forever.”

He who supplies seed to the sower

And bread for food

Will supply and multiply your seed

For sowing —

And increase the harvest

Of your righteousness.

(Bridge)

You will be enriched

In every way

To be generous

In every way —

Which through us

Will produce thanksgiving to God.

(Ending)

This ministry not only supplies

The needs of the saints,

But overflows

In many thanksgivings to God.

They will glorify Him

Because of your obedience

Flowing from confession of the gospel.

Thanks be to God

For His indescribable gift.
