2 Corinthians 7

Paul continues his appeal for holiness, urging believers to cleanse themselves in light of God’s covenant promises.

He reaffirms his affection for the Corinthians and defends his integrity.

Paul describes his distress while waiting for news from Corinth. When Titus arrived with a positive report of their repentance, Paul was comforted.

He clarifies that his earlier letter caused sorrow — but that sorrow led to repentance. He distinguishes between:

  • Godly sorrow → leads to repentance and salvation
  • Worldly sorrow → leads to death

Godly sorrow produces earnestness, a desire for purity, and a readiness to correct wrong.

The chapter ends with restored confidence and joy in the Corinthian church.

Major themes:

  • Holiness in response to covenant promise
  • Comfort through repentance
  • Godly vs worldly sorrow
  • Restoration of relationship
  • Joy after correction

Christ Foreshadowing — 2 Corinthians 7 (Condensed)

This chapter reflects Christ’s restoring grace.

Just as Peter wept bitterly after denying Jesus — and was restored — godly sorrow leads not to despair but to renewed life.

The comfort Paul speaks of flows from the God revealed in Christ — the One who receives the repentant and restores them fully.

Sorrow leads to repentance.
Repentance leads to life.
And Christ remains the faithful Restorer.

2 Corinthians 7

(Verse 1)

Since we have these promises,

Beloved —

Let us cleanse ourselves

From every defilement

Of body and spirit,

Bringing holiness to completion

In the fear of God.

(Verse 2)

Make room in your hearts for us.

We have wronged no one,

Corrupted no one,

Taken advantage of no one.

I speak not to condemn you —

For you are in our hearts,

To die together

And to live together.

(Chorus)

I rejoice — not because you were grieved,

But because your grief led to repentance.

Godly sorrow brings life.

Worldly sorrow brings death.

See what earnestness

God has produced in you.

(Verse 3)

Even when I came to Macedonia,

My body had no rest.

Conflicts outside, fears within.

But God —

Who comforts the downcast —

Comforted us

By the coming of Titus.

(Verse 4)

And not only by his arrival,

But by the joy he brought —

Telling of your longing,

Your mourning,

Your zeal for what is right.

(Bridge)

For godly grief

Produces repentance

That leads to salvation

Without regret.

But worldly grief

Produces death.

See what this grief has done —

Earnestness, eagerness,

Indignation at sin,

Longing for what is right,

Readiness to see justice done.

(Ending)

Therefore I rejoice —

Because I have complete confidence in you.

My joy is restored.

Your repentance has proven sincere.

And comfort has overflowed again.
