Paul reluctantly speaks of a heavenly vision but avoids focusing on it. He distances himself from pride and emphasizes that such revelations do not define his ministry.
To prevent pride, a “thorn in the flesh” was given. Paul does not define it. He prayed three times for its removal. God’s answer was not removal but sustaining grace.
The key declaration: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul concludes that weakness becomes the platform for Christ’s power.
He defends his apostleship again — signs and wonders were present among them — but his true mark is sacrificial love.
He closes with pastoral concern that he may find ongoing sin and lack of repentance.
Major themes:
This chapter reflects the cross-shaped power of Christ.
Just as Jesus endured suffering rather than escaping it, Paul learns that grace sustains where relief is withheld.
Power through weakness echoes the cross — where apparent defeat became ultimate victory.
The thorn is not explained — but grace is declared sufficient.
Christ is the One whose strength rests on the weak, whose power shines through frailty, and whose grace sustains to the end.
2 Corinthians 12
(Verse 1)
I must go on boasting —
Though it gains nothing.
I will speak of visions
And revelations of the Lord.
I know a man in Christ
Who fourteen years ago
Was caught up to the third heaven —
Whether in the body or out,
God knows.
(Verse 2)
He heard things
That cannot be told —
Which man may not utter.
On behalf of such a one
I will boast —
But on my own behalf
I will not boast,
Except of my weaknesses.
(Chorus)
To keep me from becoming proud,
A thorn was given —
A messenger of Satan
To torment me.
Three times I pleaded
That it would depart.
But He said:
“My grace is sufficient for you,
For My power
Is made perfect in weakness.”
(Verse 3)
Therefore I will boast
All the more gladly
Of my weaknesses —
So that the power of Christ
May rest upon me.
For when I am weak,
Then I am strong.
(Verse 4)
I became a fool in boasting —
You compelled me.
The signs of a true apostle
Were performed among you
With patience —
Signs and wonders
And mighty works.
(Bridge)
Have I been a burden to you?
I seek not what is yours —
But you.
For children are not responsible
To save up for parents,
But parents for children.
I will gladly spend
And be spent
For your souls.
(Ending)
Even so —
I fear that when I come
I may find jealousy, strife,
Impurity and unrest.
I fear I may mourn
Over many
Who have not repented.
