Paul begins defending his authority, responding to critics who claimed he was weak in person but bold in letters.
He explains that his ministry does not operate by worldly standards. Spiritual warfare involves truth and obedience, not manipulation or force.
The “strongholds” refer to arguments and false thinking that oppose the knowledge of God. Paul’s goal is not dominance, but bringing minds into submission to Christ.
He rejects self-promotion and comparison with rival teachers. His authority has boundaries assigned by God — and Corinth falls within that assignment.
Paul’s aim is expansion of the gospel, not personal reputation. The proper place for boasting is in the Lord alone.
Major themes:
This chapter reflects Christ’s meek authority.
Jesus did not conquer through force but through truth and obedience to the Father. His battle was not of worldly power but spiritual victory.
The destruction of strongholds echoes Christ’s triumph over deception and sin.
True authority builds up, truth defeats falsehood, and boasting belongs to the Lord alone.
2 Corinthians 10
(Verse 1)
I, Paul, appeal to you
By the meekness and gentleness of Christ —
I who am said to be timid in person
But bold when absent.
I beg that when I come
I may not need to show
The boldness some expect.
(Verse 2)
For though we walk in the flesh,
We do not wage war according to the flesh.
The weapons of our warfare
Are not of this world —
But have divine power
To destroy strongholds.
(Chorus)
We destroy arguments,
And every proud thing
Raised against the knowledge of God.
We take every thought captive
To obey Christ.
Our authority is for building up —
Not for tearing down.
(Verse 3)
Some say we walk by worldly standards.
But our battle is not with image or presence.
Our power is not in appearance —
But in truth.
And when obedience is complete,
Rebellion will be addressed.
(Verse 4)
We do not compare ourselves
With those who commend themselves.
They measure themselves by themselves —
And lack understanding.
But we will not boast beyond limits —
Only in the field God assigned to us.
(Bridge)
Our hope is that as your faith grows,
Our field may widen —
To preach the gospel in regions beyond you.
Not boasting in another’s labor —
But in what the Lord has done.
(Ending)
Let the one who boasts
Boast in the Lord.
For it is not the one who commends himself
Who is approved —
But the one
Whom the Lord commends.
