Amaziah becomes king and initially follows God, though not wholeheartedly. He assembles an army and hires additional troops from Israel, but a prophet warns him not to partner with the ungodly northern kingdom. Amaziah obeys and dismisses the troops, losing the money he paid. God gives Judah victory over Edom, but Amaziah brings home Edom’s idols and worships them. God sends a prophet to rebuke him, but Amaziah refuses to listen and challenges Israel to battle. Israel defeats Judah, breaks down Jerusalem’s wall, and carries off treasures and captives. Amaziah’s pride leads to downfall, and he is later assassinated.
Christ-Foreshadowing: Amaziah’s mixed devotion contrasts with Christ, the perfectly faithful King whose obedience never wavers.
