Samuel grew old, and his sons, appointed as judges, were corrupt. The people demanded a king “like the nations,” effectively rejecting God’s kingship. Though distressed, Samuel prayed, and God told him to grant their request but warn them. Samuel described how a king would take their sons, daughters, fields, and freedom, yet the people insisted. The chapter marks Israel’s shift from divine rule to human monarchy, revealing misplaced trust in earthly solutions.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
Israel’s desire for a king like the nations highlights the world’s need not for a worldly ruler, but for Christ—the perfect King who rules in righteousness, justice, and humility.
