Desperate to end the plagues, the Philistines returned the ark with a guilt offering—gold tumors and rats—acknowledging God’s judgment. The cows pulling the cart traveled straight to Beth Shemesh, confirming divine involvement. But some Israelites irreverently looked inside the ark and were struck down, showing the seriousness of God’s holiness. The people, overwhelmed, sent the ark to Kiriath Jearim for safekeeping. The chapter emphasizes that God’s presence is sacred and must be approached with reverence.
Foreshadowing of Christ:
God’s holiness that brings both judgment and mercy prepares the way for Christ, whose atoning sacrifice allows sinful people to approach a holy God without fear.
